Five Signs You May Need to Replace Your Hot Water Heater

May 30, 2018

Working quietly in the basement, the hot water heater does not attract attention until it stops working properly.

Here are five sure signs that your hot water heater needs replacement.

Leaks

Any amount of water leakage from your water heater is a clear sign that replacement is necessary. Call a plumbing contractor right away to address the problem.

Age

If your water heater is over 10 years old, replacement time is near. Electric water heaters last from 10 to 15 years, while a gas water heater will last 10 to 12 years.

Rust

If you start to notice rust-colored water or rust stains in your sink, rust and debris have started to accumulate. This sediment collects at the bottom of the tank and affects your water when the problem worsens.

Sub-Cold Water

Do you notice that your shower is not as warm as it used to be? It is a sign that either the heating element or thermostat is wearing down. Although this is a more subtle sign than water leakage or rust, replacement is likely.

Water Cannot Drain

If scale and rust have built up to the point that it has blocked the drain valve, you will need to consult with a plumber. It is likely that you will need to replace your hot water heater.

Always consult with a plumber about water heater issues. Call South East Total Service for hot water heater replacement in Chattanooga.

A clog may develop in your sink or tub. If just one fixture is draining slowly, then you generally do not have to worry about your sewer line. However, if all the fixtures in your house are having problems, then there is a systemic issue that needs to be addressed.

Pipes are ordinarily out of durable materials, so they can last for decades. The thing to keep in mind is that if you have moved into a rather old house, then there is a chance the pipes are from when it was first built. An inspection from a professional will let you know how old your home’s pipes are and how much longer they have. It is better to get them replaced before they burst than afterward.

A video inspection is the best way to find out what’s going on inside the drain. The plumber sends a small camera into the pipe and watches the video it sends back in real time on a monitor. The picture is clear enough to see the sides of the drain and identify problems. Tree roots may be invading a gap in a joint or crack in the pipe.
